What should responsible investors consider with M&A?

Neville White, head of socially responsible investing policy and research at EdenTree Investment Management, discusses the need for companies to act responsibly while still producing results. White focuses on Unilever and AkzoNobel, both firms operate on the premise that shareholders will do well if society, the environment and communities also do well. Both have held off M&A activity from companies that do not share their values. White says that activist investors with SRI in mind can be beneficial to improving performance, though it can swing the other way; if investors are narrow minded the business could be destroyed.
